Operation: This procedure minimizes forehead creases, drooping eyebrows, hooding over eyes, furrowed forehead, and frown lines by removing excess tissue, altering muscles and tightening the forehead skin. This may be done using the traditional technique where an incision is made across the top of the head just behind the hairline. This may also be done with the use of an endoscope which requires 3 to 5 short incisions. This procedure is most often done on people over 40.
Operation Time (estimate): This takes about 1 to 2 hours.
Anesthesia/Pain Control: General anesthesia or local with sedation is administered.
Location: This is usually an outpatient procedure.
Side effects (Possible): Patients may experience temporary swelling, numbness, headaches, or bruising. Possible side effects for the traditional method that may occur are itching and hair loss.
Complications (Possible): Possible injuries to facial nerve may occur that can result in loss of motion, muscle weakness, or an asymmetrical look. Infection and broad or excessive scarring may also occur.
Downtime: Patients can go back to work in 7 to 10 days, sooner if endoscopic method was used. Participation in strenuous activity can occur in several weeks. Bruises fully fade in 2 to 3 weeks and sun exposure needs to be limited for several months.
Duration of Results: Results range from variable to permanent.
