FACELIFT
Operation: This procedure is used to improve
sagging facial skin, jowls, and loose neck skin by removing
excess fat, tightening muscles, and redraping skin. This
is most often done on men and women over 40.
Operation Time (estimate): The whole process
takes several hours.
Anesthesia/Pain Control: Patients are either
under local with sedation or general.
Location: Usually outpatient. Some patients
may require short inpatient stay.
Side effects (Possible): Some patients
may experience temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and
tenderness of skin as well as tight feeling and dry skin.
Male patients have a permanent need to shave behind their
ears where beard growing skin is repositioned.
Complications (Possible): Possible injury
to the nerves that control facial muscles or feeling (usually
temporary but may be permanent) may occur. Other possible
complications include infection, bleeding, poor healing,
excessive scarring, asymmetry or change in hairline.
Downtime: Patients can go back to work
in 10 to 14 days and participate in more strenuous activity
in 2 weeks or more. Bruising will take 2 to 3 weeks to fade
and patients must limit their exposure to the sun for several
months.
Duration of Results: Results usually last
5 to 10 years.
